How to Write Achieveable Goals
Writing clearly defined, easy-to-measure goals is an important step in making plans for the upcoming year. As Stephen Covey says in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, you must “begin with the end in mind”. Having a clear picture of what you want out of your business will make it much easier to plan how to get there.
1. Identify your goals
- What motivates you?
- What do you really want?
- If there were no limitations, what do you dream of?
- Do these different goals form a big picture?
2. Write down your goals using the present tense, as if they’ve already happened. Some people use these present tense goals as daily affirmations, to reinforce that they are achievable.
3. Make your goals SMART
- Specific
- Measurable and meaningful to you
- Attainable
- Realistic, and your Responsibility to make them happen
- Time frame that you’ll complete them
4. What is the payoff of reaching your goals? To create motivation for taking action towards achieving these goals, you must have a very clear sense of what will be better about your life, and why you will commit time to this.
5. How committed are you to reaching these goals? Sometimes, working towards goals requires change, which can be uncomfortable. Sometimes it requires sacrifices in other areas while you fufill these goals.
6. Will you take action now? If you are truly committed to these goals, then you will take immediate action, and continue to work on the steps towards these goals. If you’re not willing to take action immediately, than go back and work on your goals. You need to find the goals that are meaningful to you, and that get you excited to work on.
