Is self-improvement part of your business plan?

Networking, Real Estate Resources

As we get closer to the end of the year, many of you are probably working on a business plan for 2009. I certainly hope so! Additionally, you may be starting to think about New Years’ Resolutions.

It’s that time of year, and I think it’s great that many people think about what improvements they want to make in their life and their business. But is it just a pipe dream? Or do you have a specific plan to make these resolutions happen, as well?

Why not add some of these self-improvement goals to the business plan you are creating? Just as you work much more efficiently with a plan and a schedule in business, you’re more likely to make these changes if they are an integral part of your schedule.

I encourage many people to continuously seek out learning opportunities, and I often hear that they just don’t have time. This is where your plan comes in. You won’t feel guilty about taking a day or two off for a seminar, or spending 2 nights a week at the community college if it’s scheduled in as part of your business plan. And you’ll be able to work it into your schedule, because you’ll know ahead of time that this is something you’ll be attending.

Have you wanted to work with a coach, but always thought it was out of your budget? Work it into your business plan as a legitimate business expense, make a plan for where the income will come from (putting a portion away monthly, or an extra closing), and commit to this form of self-improvement.  The most successful athletes, musicians and business owners have coaches, and I strongly recommend working with one.

Committing to these tasks at the beginning of the year makes it much easier to make sure they happen. So make the resolution now that everything that is important to you will get worked into a life plan – business goals, personal goals, health goals, income goals, etc.

Remember, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!”
