Should you be collecting email leads?

Are you collecting email addresses from your sphere and your website visitors? In planning for your marketing for the upcoming year, this is definitely something you should plan on implementing if you haven’t already. And even if you do, you could probably make your list work even harder for you.
With the internet and email being such a big part of people’s lives now, you may find you reach some people better this way, instead of via mail.
To start, all you really need is a simple autoresponder. Services like Aweber, Constant Contact and 1ShoppingCart are all good options.
And while you may be able to collect emails from clients as you are working with them without too much hassle, you’ll find you probably have to offer website visitors something of value for them to part with their email. After all, most people aren’t looking to increase the amount of junk mail they get. So make sure you offer someting of value to them, and they’ll watch out for the email you send.
Not everybody is a writer, and a free report doesn’t always do it anymore. Here are some ideas you can put together:
- Compile a monthly “Best Picks” of the homes available for sale, whether they are yours or someone elses. Giving your clients the “in” on what you think is the best value will help develop their trust in you as a local expert. If you have a webpage devoted to Investors, you could compile a separate list for them, and send them a similar, targeted report.
- Even better, offer a video Walking Tour of your Best Picks. In an afternoon you could do quick videos of your Top Ten, put them on YouTube, and then embed those ten on a special web page on your site. Now you’re not only giving your clients a great insight into these homes, but you can gain additional traffic to each individual video on YouTube.
- Instead of the overused, “What You Need to Know Before You Buy a Home”, try a different angle. What about, “Things You Need to Know Before You Move to X Neighborhood.” Whether it’s a fun report with information on the best eateries, movie theatres, etc, or simply an informative report on where to go to change their drivers license, pay a water bill, the features of local banks, quirks in local laws, etc., you’re giving them valuable information they can actually use.
- Think about a series of mp3’s that lets them listen in as you have a candid conversation with a mortgage broker on ways to get the best rate, ways to help them improve their credit score, or things to watch out for in the mortgage process. Bonus: strike up an agreement with the mortgage broker that they can promote this audio to their clients as well, and you’re getting in front of a whole new group of people.
Hopefully these ideas give you a place to start as you come up with a quick, easy and valuable offer to get visitors to subscribe.

Great post. I already employ some of these strategies, but you’ve also given me some new ideas to expand on.

Great ideas, thanks! Now I’m just getting myself online and only have an ActiveRain Blog set up. Is there a free widget I can add that will serve as an email capture advice? Or other such tool? Or do I simply have to redirect to my personal website (once I get one up and runnning) and pay for an autoresponder there?
Thanks!

Hi Kam, thanks for stopping by!
You will need to sign up for an autoresponder service, such as Aweber, 1ShoppingCart, or GetResponse, but you can actually do that before you have your website set-up. You will get html code that you can insert onto your ActiveRain sidebar to start collecting email leads, and once your website is done, you can add it there, as well.
Hope that helps!

Could you recommend any specific resources, books, or other blogs on this specific marketing topic?

Thanks for the info – I wonder how many sites/companys use this in their practice?
