Using TweetDeck to maximize your Twitter time

If you’ve gotten started on Twitter, you may find that at the beginning it’s pretty easy to keep up with the conversations and the people you are following. However, as you start to follow more and more people, you may start to feel overwhelmed by the “noise”. A great tool for following lots of people, and still being able to catch the conversations, info, links, etc. that you want is by using a tool like TweetDeck.

TweetDeck is an Adobe Air application designed to help you better monitor your Twitter account. Rather than logging onto Twitter on the web, you open this program, and it uses an API to pull your Twitter account activity.

Here’s a great demonstration video on setting up TweetDeck, the basics of the different options you have, and getting started with it.

A great use of the columns is to sort out the different types of people you follow. You could have one column for real estate related people, and filter those conversations out. You should definitely think about creating a separate column for local people you’re connected with, as these will be the highest potential to provide business, and you want to make sure that you’re interacting with them. You may even create a column for a search of your city or town name, so you can see all the conversation related to that. The ability to sort and filter conversations like this is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable features of TweetDeck.

It’s not mentioned on this video, but the newest version of TweetDeck also integrates with your Facebook account, so you can post status updates to both Twitter and Facebook, as well as create a column to watch Facebook status updates from your friends. You could theoretically monitor both accounts almost exclusively from TweetDeck if you wanted to.

For those that want to go a little further, here’s an Advanced TweetDeck tutorial from someone that is following 15,000 people. He has some great tips on how to make sure you’re still connecting with your followers, even when you have that many people.

If you plan on using Twitter in your online real estate marketing strategy, I strongly suggest you check out TweetDeck. It’s a fantastic tool!

I tied Tweetdeck for awhile and found it burdensome and a memory hog. Lately I have been using Twhirl. It’s much lighter and I can pop between screens easyly while not taking up much screen space. I suppose Tweetdeck is alright if you have the extra room.

Love your blog and am there every time you write something new. Thanks for taking the time!!!

    Hi Joel!
TweetDeck did used to be more of a memory hog, I think. I know that it used to give me problems as well, but they’ve updated the program, and it seems to run better now. Maybe try it out again? I’ve used Twhirl as well, but TweetDeck just seems to have so much more functionality. Of course, it’s been a while since I’ve tried Twhirl, so maybe I need to to try it again, too!

    Thanks for stopping by!
